Twenty Percent Project Update #8

Week 8 update

This week I submitted my play to the first competition that I mentioned in the previous post. (Of course before I did so I did some last-minute edits to the play, particularly with regards to the formatting, which was far too unconventional). My mentor also informed me that she would have feedback regarding my play by Monday. This means that before I attempt to submit my play to another competition, I will hopefully have a more polished piece of writing. The last thing that I did this week was to begin to plan the presentation that I will give on the project.

The Final Draft! (Or at least the draft I submitted to the competition, and not really the whole thing because screens are only so big):

Twenty Percent Project Update #7

Week 7 Update

This week I made some smaller edits to my play and gave a copy of the draft to my mentor, Ms. Woods. I hope that I will be able to receive some feedback on the quality of the piece by next week. Ms. Woods also gave me a link to a competition called the Marin Young Playwrights festival. According to the website, if my play wins the competition it could potentially be performed onstage, which would be amazing. Although the deadline is soon (November 22nd), I think that I can make it.

And to compliment the picture of the donkey from last week I have a picture of what the parrot in my play would look like:

Twenty Percent Project Update #6

Week 6 Update

This week I had initially intended to give the play to my mentor for some reviews, but I decided that it would be better for me to revise the ending of the play again before allowing for her to look over it, since I thought that the ending of the play was somewhat rough and rushed. I therefore intend to revise the play and give it to Ms. Woods either this weekend or early next week. Although I feel that this is a slight detour from my plan, I realized that I am far ahead of the timetable that I had prepared, which project the completion of the play at the end of November. Since I am already nearly finished with the writing process, I think that this slight setback will not have a huge impact on the progression of the project.

Because my play is about donkeys and I am sick of doing screenshots, here is a beautiful donkey:

Twenty Percent Project Update #5

Week 5 update

This week I managed to actually complete the one act. Although this appears as though I am ahead of schedule, I think that there will be a need to undergo a great deal of editing, since the play itself still seems to be relatively rough as if now. In order to do this I plan to not only read it multiple times to revise it, but also show the play to as many people as I can in order to get feedback on the script. I also hope to show the play to my mentor as soon as I can in order to get feedback, but this may take some times as my mentor appears to be relatively busy as of this time.

Conclusion of the play:

Twenty Percent Project Update #4

Week 4 Update

This week I managed to make some changes to the initial outline (more specifically I decided on a proper ending for the play), and I managed to get started on writing the first scene of the play. Unfortunately, I was not able to show my work to my mentor as I had previously planned since my mentor has a very busy schedule for the next few weeks, so I think it would be best to not bother her with additional requests. However I think this may be a better strategy in the long run, as all I could have really show her at this point is the outline, so it may be better to wait until at least a few scenes are complete before presenting it to my mentor.

The beginning of the first scene!

Twenty Percent Project update #3

Week Three update

This week for the twenty percent project I managed to complete the outline for the play. The outline is relatively similar to the initial structure that I had intended to have, with only a few minor alterations. Next week I intend to show the outline to my mentor to see if I am on the right track and to get some ideas for some improvements and changes to the basic structure. I intend to do this before moving on to work on writing the first scene of the play, which I hope to be able to complete by the end of next week if all goes well.

Twenty Percent Project update #2

Twenty Percent Playwriting Project update #2

This week I managed to accomplish two things. First of all, I managed to find a mentor who was willing to help me with the process of not only writing a play, but also getting it published. We also came to the conclusion that I could not only try to get the play published, but also enter it into some competitions. Secondly I managed to decide on the topic of the play, and I have begun some of the outlining (Although I still have to decide on some of the details for the plot and characters), which I hope to finish by the end of next week or, if this proves to be too difficult, early on in the following week.
